The City of Yavatmal is headquarters of Yavatmal district. It is located in eastern Maharashtra which is known as Vidharbha Region.
It is located on a hilly plateau at an elevation of 433.70 m above sea level. The hilly area forms a ridge that divides the watershed of the Wardha River on the north and the Penganga on the south. The city derives its name from this very location ‘Yavat' means mountain and ‘mal' means row. Annual average rainfall on Yavatmal plateau is 900 mm per year, most of it received during the four months from June to September. Most of the precipitation runs off to the river valley and very small quantity is retained on the plateau. Therefore droughts are not uncommon. The climate is dry and hot most of the year with mild winter and severe summer. Yavatmal plateau had a rich forest with good quality timber used in building industry. However the forest is not in good shape today. Yavatmal district population is 24, 00,000 with more than 80 % people staying in rural villages. Yavatmal is the only city of the district with population of more than 1 lakh.
So far no archaeological excavations have been made in any part of the district. Some implements found in Kahir, Parsona and Dhoki villages it can be ascertained that the area was inhabited during the prehistoric period. The town saw various rulers from the ancient history to the Mughals, Marathas, and the British. Yavatmal was the main town of Berar . In 1853, the British East India Company took over Berar . In 1863, Yavatmal became part of East Berar district and later of Southeast Berar district, which were districts of the Central Provinces (CP). Up till the Independence in 1947, Yavatmal, which had majority of its population speaking Marathi, was part of Hindi speaking Central Province , now renamed as Madhya Pradesh. In 1960 the city along with Yavatmal District was merged with Maharashtra State .
Yavatmal is located at 19.08 0 N latitude and 78.05 0 east latitude. The town is situated towards the northern part of the district. It is well connected by road to Nagpur (136 km) and Amravati (92.2 km). The town does not have a direct broad gauge rail connection. The nearest broad gauge station is Dhamangaon on the Mumbai – Kolkata route (via Nagpur ) which is about 40 km from Yavatmal. However the town is connected to Murtizapur on the main line (Mumbai – Kolkata) by a narrow gauge railway. The distance from Yavatmal to Murtizapur is about 50 km by this railway.
Nagpur is the nearest airport (139 kms), linked to Mumbai (776 kms). Other airports in the vicinity are Aurangabad (288 kms) and Pune (475 kms).
