The Town of Warora is headquarters of Warora Tehsil. It is located in Chandrapur District of eastern Maharashtra also known as Vidharbha Region.
The information on the ancient history of the town is not available. However the town came to prominence in the early 19 th Century during the British Rule when a colliery was established here. The British also extended the Railway from Wardha to Warora and the town became important as a terminus of the railways. Later the colliery was stopped in 1906 and the Railway connected to the Grand Trunk route from Chennai to New Delhi . Though the town lost its importance as terminus it continues to be an administrative and commerce centre.
Warora is a tehsil in the Chandrapur District. In the 18th century , the district became part of the dominions of the Bhonsle Maratha Maharajas of Nagpur. At the conclusion of the Third Anglo-Maratha War, the Bhonsle state of Nagpur became a princely state of British India. In 1853, when the Bhonsle Maharaja died without a direct male heir, the British annexed the kingdom, and established Nagpur Province as part of British India . Nagpur Province was merged into the newly-constituted Central Provinces in 1861 and Nagpur Division was established as part of the Central Provinces . Chandrapur, then known as Chanda District, became part of Nagpur Division. After independence in 1947, the former Central Provinces became the new state of Madhya Pradesh. During 1956 the Indian states were reorganized on linguistic lines and the largely Marathi-speaking Chandrapur District became part of Bombay State, and subsequently Maharashtra State in 1960.
