The City of Latur is headquarters of Latur district. It is located in South Central Maharashtra which is known as Marathwada Region. Latur city is situated on an altitude of 663 m above mean sea level. It has developed on the high level plateau which runs along the Nanded- Barshi and Ausa Road . The surrounding area is somewhat low level having good agriculture productivity. The Manjra and Tawarja Rivers flow through the district and it is also drained by other nalas (streams). Latur district is one of the draught prone areas of the state and is covered under the Central Governments Draught Prone Areas Programme. Latur district population is 20,78,237 with 76.5 % people staying in rural villages. Latur City has the highest population of about 3 lakhs in the district followed by Udgir having a population of 2.6 lakhs. The other urban areas namely Ahmadpur, Nilanga and Ausa have a population of less than 50000 persons. The urban areas are fairly evenly distributed spatially in the district. The district shares its southern boundary with Bidar district of Karnataka. It is also very close to Andhra Pradesh state.
It is an ancient and historical city of the Marathwada Region. The name Latur is derived from the ancient name Lattalura. It was, over the centuries, variously ruled by the Satavahanas, the Sakas, the Chalukyas, the Yadavas of Deogiri, the Delhi Sultans, the Bahamani rulers of South India , Adil Shahi, and the Mughals. Later in the 19th century it became part of the independent princely state of Hyderabad . Earlier known as Naldurg tehsil, in 1905 it was merged with surrounding areas and renamed Latur tehsil, and became part of Osmanabad district. After independence and the merger of Hyderabad with the Indian Union, Osmanabad became part of Bombay Province . In 1960, with the creation of Maharashtra , it became one of its districts. On August 15, 1982 , Latur was separated from Osmanabad to form a separate Latur district.
Latur City is located at 18 0 42 ' North Latitude 73 0 15'East Latitude. The city is situated in South western part of the district. It is well connected by road to Solapur (120 km) Aurangabad (260 km), Pune (337 Km) and Mumbai (497 Km). It is connected by broad gauge railway to the above places as it falls on the Manmad – Secundrabad route. A narrow gauge line from Miraj to Latur is now being converted to broad gauge. The completion of this line will further improve the connectivity of the city and considerably reduce the travel time from Mumbai. The nearest airports are located at Aurangabad and which is well connected to Mumbai. Latur has an airstrip but it is not being used for passenger traffic.
