The City of Jalna is headquarters of Jalna district. It is located in South Central Maharashtra which is known as Marathwada Region. Jalna is situated on an altitude of 508 m (1625 feet) above mean sea level. The entire district is situated in the Godavari basin. Two rivers flow through the Jalna city namely the Kundalika and the Sina. Overall the city has a flat topography but there is a gentle slope from the North West to south east. Both these rivers are tributaries of the Dudhna River which finally joins the Godavari . Jalna district is one of the draught prone areas of the state and is covered under the Central Governments Draught Prone Areas Programme. Jalna district population is 16,12,980 with 81 % people staying in rural villages. Jalna City has the highest population of about 2.35 lakhs in the district followed by Partur having a population of 29012.
Jalna is an ancient City its ancient name is ‘Janakpur' it is believed to be the same Janakpur which belonged to King Janak father of Sita, who later married Lord Rama. The recorded history has it that Jalna was part of Akbar's Kingdom during the Mughal Rule. It later became part of the dominion of the Nizam of Hyderabad. During the 19th century Jalna became a military city and the cantonment was built in 1927. In 1948 Hyderabad was merged with the Indian Union. In 1956 the Marathwada region. (of which Jalna was a part), was merged with Bombay Province . In 1960 it became part of Maharashtra . In 1981, Aurangabad was bifurcated, with Jalna becoming a separate district. Jalna has five tehsils and four urban areas. Jalna is located at 19 0 – 1' N latitude and 75 0 – 54' east latitude. The city is situated in the central part of the district. It is well connected by road to Aurangabad (63 km), Pune (289 Km) and Mumbai (427 Km). It is also connected by broad gauge railway to the above places as well as it falls on the Manmad – Secunderabad route.
The nearest airport is at Aurangabad (63 kms), which is linked to Mumbai. Pune is another airport located close by.
